Thattekad Bird Sanctuary Wildlife Safari Guide
Wings of the Western Ghats · Ernakulam, Kerala, Western Ghats, India
A compact, bird-rich lowland forest in Kerala — long known to ornithologists as one of the richest bird habitats in peninsular India.
Thattekad — sometimes spelled Thattekkad — is a small but exceptional sanctuary on the banks of the Periyar River, first surveyed by Dr Sálim Ali, who described it as one of the richest bird habitats in peninsular India. The reserve and surrounding forest patches hold a remarkable concentration of Western Ghats specialists, and its trails are designed for birders and bird photographers more than for vehicle-based wildlife tourism.
Days here are quiet, slow and intentional. Pre-dawn starts, careful trail walking with expert guides, long sessions at fruiting trees, and patient hides for nocturnal species like the Sri Lanka Frogmouth. For birders and bird photographers, few destinations in South India offer this combination of accessibility, density and quality.

Photography in Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
Thattekad is fundamentally a bird destination. Mammals are present but incidental — manage expectations and let the birdlife define the journey.
World-class. Hides, dawn sessions, fruiting tree work, and night sessions for nightjars, owls and the Frogmouth. A 400–600mm lens is ideal; many subjects are mid-distance in canopy or undergrowth.
Forest light is low and dappled — high ISO capability matters. Terrain is mostly gentle, with some uneven trail sections.
Few destinations in South India deliver this density of endemic and signature species in such a small, accessible footprint.
Frequently asked questions
How many bird species can I expect to see?
Serious birders typically log 80–130+ species across a 2–4 day stay, depending on season, weather and effort. Endemic specialists are a particular highlight.
Do I need to be an experienced birder?
No. Thattekad rewards beginners as much as experts — our guides pace the experience for your level.
When should I visit?
October to March is the peak window. Avoid the southwest monsoon (June–September) when trails are heavily affected by rain.
Are night birding sessions safe?
Yes — they are guide-led, on established trails, and a major reason many birders visit Thattekad.
Can I combine Thattekad with Periyar?
Yes — they pair beautifully into a longer Kerala forest and birding journey.
